Men's Soccer With Shutout Victory in Season Opener

August 28, 2009. Durango, CO.  - Head Coach Oige Kennedy was granted approval from the fans earlier today when the Skyhawks swept the visiting Rattlers of St. Mary's 5-0 in their season and home opener of the 2009 season. With a crowd of close to 500, the Skyhawks didn't seem to miss a beat from the 2008 season, dominating every aspect of the game.

The Skyhawks were able to strike in the first three minutes when junior Byron Cephers crossed the ball in front of the net and senior David Barden poked the ball in with his head. After a 35 minute lighting delay the Skyhawks scored again but this time with the help of the head of the opposing team when a corner kick from senior Sam Morris went off the head of a Rattler defender and past his keeper for a 2-0 FLC lead.

The second half was much like the first with the Skyhawks controlling possession throughout the half. Fort Lewis struck three more times in the second half starting with  a corner kick from Sam Morris which found the head and back of the net of junior Jamie Cunnigham. Next was junior Euan Purcell giving David Barden his second goal with a sweet touch pass past the last defender. The final goal came when most of the FLC reserves were in the game and sophomore Thomas Hoang sent a pass back to freshman Cory Dean who fired a low shot from 30 yards out that found the lower left side of the net for the final goal and 5-0 vicotry.

Fort Lewis outshot the Rattlers with 16 shots on goal to their 4. Senior Zane Wells had 2 saves and earned the shutout.

The Skyhawks who are now 1-0-0 on the season will face the Grizzlies of Adams State on Sunday, August 30 at 1:00 p.m.
